Meet Chamy

From an extended family, Chamy could have scored four aggregates in her Primary Seven exam; however, she could not continue her education due to a lack of school fees and dropped out.

At the age of 18, her uncle forced her into marriage, and she had four children: two boys and two girls. While pregnant with her youngest child, Chamy was diagnosed with HIV. She reported that her husband, who had been living with HIV for a long time without disclosing it had infected her. The diagnosis left her depressed, and her marriage became chaotic and abusive.

In 2022, Chamy moved to Kampala to work in a dairy business, which eventually shut down. A friend later introduced her to sex work, where she could earn at least 100,000 Ugandan shillings per day. However, this work was stressful despite the financial gains. She often walked along the streets looking for clients.

In 2024, a friend connected Chamy to Rahab Uganda, where she received love and care through the different programs extended by Rahab Uganda. She has since been equipped with several skills, including tailoring skills, and is currently receiving training in the garment industry. She has shown interest by applying for retention after the student training program; this employment will enable her to buy a sewing machine and open her own fashion and design shop.

She also reported that she has quit commercial sex work for about six months, maintains good adherence to ART, is psychologically stable, and is now an ambassador for change.
